Photon Indirect Lighting

Is anybody using Photon Indirect Lighting in their renderings? I've tried it a couple of times and the results look like someone is shining a bunch of flashlights at the house.

If you are using it successfully please post examples along with the settings you are using.

Thanks!

nope. I get the same result.

nope. I get the same result.

Textured mode with lights on works the best as far as speed vs quality. And looks quick nice. Just wish that you could save views and it would autoregen when the model is changed. 2014?

Saving Views

The ability to save views has been around a long time. While in SoftView select File--> View File--> Save. In 2012 and later the saved view files are listed in the Navigation pane. In earlier versions you you have to select File--> View File--> Load to retrieve the saved views.

The radius of your lights is too small.

Light radius

What would be a good size radius to use? What other settings would help with getting good results using photon lighting?

It depends on the size of

It depends on the size of your room, this is most useful for interiors, the smaller the room the smaller the radius, a couple of feet for smaller rooms and up to 5,6,7,8 for larger spaces.

I did some experimenting

I did some experimenting with Photon Indirect Lighting and was finally able to get something that didn't look like a bunch of flashlights shining everywhere. By the way, this was done in version 2014. This is just a test room I set up for lighting tests so not part of an actual house.

In the first image I have Photon Indirect Lighting turned on with the following settings.

  • Ambient Light:4
  • Ambient occlusion:On
  • Headlight:Off
  • Photon Indirect Lighting:On
  • Number of Photons:10
  • Energy:3
  • Bounces:4
  • Radius:6'
  • Calculate all Shadows:On
  • Soft Shadows:On
  • Turn Off Lights in Symbols:Off

In the second image everything is exactly the same except I disabled Photon Indirect Lighting.

The biggest thing I noticed is that with Photon Indirect Lighting on the lighting picks up on the colors in the room. Notice that on the ceiling you get the red from the pool table top and near the back wall it picks up on the green from the walls. Also the room is a bit brighter.
