Am I correct in believing that I need to go back into my old softplan files and open each drawing in 2014 to insure that they will still remain viable in future updates?
Drawing files are all forward compatible but not backward compatible. You can open any older file with a newer version of SoftPlan. But once the file has been saved in the newer version it can no longer be opened in an older version. Conversions are automatic so there is no need to go back through your old files and convert them.

even version 6?
Version 6 was a DOS based program almost 20 years ago. I started on version 10 which was the first Windows based version. Since I don't have any version 6 files I can not answer that one.

I personally have my last version which is 13 installed along with v2014 and have my v13 files backed up on an external drive. If I want one of them in v2014 I pull it into a different folder to work in 2014. Just how I handle my original drawings.
