Ring Joist issue
SoftPlan Version:
2014 Plus

Hi Bill and all,

The highlighted Ring Joists are attached to the 10-ft walls but at 8' height. Every time I hit Ctrl+C they go back up to 10' height and bring the joists back up with them. How do I keep them and make them stay at 8' height?

Thanks,

Vince

Edit the items.

Edit the items.

Go to the "Common" tab and uncheck "cleanup"

cleanup

Thanks Chris, "cleanup" is already unchecked on every single joist, still doing it.

How did you draw your ceiling joists? Did you use Ceiling System or did you draw the Ring Joists and also the Ceiling Joists as a Joist Poly, or did you draw each and every joist individually?

ceiling system

I used Ceiling System and then exploded it cause I needed to move some of the ring and joists.

Ceiling System

A ceiling system elevation is controlled by setting an Elevation Offset either up or down. But when you exploded it you converted it into individual components. These individual components also get a new item called a Level. Levels control both the offset and the height of the joists. All items on the same Level will be at the same offset and height. If you edit one item that belongs to a level it affects all other items that belong to that same level.

So what I think is happening is that you have other joists in the plan that belong to the same level as the joists you want to be at 8' and these other joists are set at 10'. Try editing your joists in the 8' room and change the Level to another number that is not already being used somewhere else. Then you should be able to set the elevation for one of the joists in the 8' ceiling and all of the others will move with it. You can change the level of your joists be editing one and setting the level and offset then repeat edit the other joists you want to be on the same level.

Level #

yes That worked. Thanks Bill for the help and comprehensive explanation!

Stupid joist level and depth

Well..actually it didn't work. I've set all joists on level 1 to be 10' and level 2 to be 8' and Ctrl+C will bring level 2 back up to 8'.

Another problem I'm having is the joist depth. When I change one set of joists to 11.5" all the other 5.5" joists are also changed to 11.5". Does level setting also affect depth setting too? Do joists have to be in different levels to have different depths?

Thanks for the help.

Joists

Level should affect both joist elevation and joist height. Everything on the same level will have the same elevation and height. Is that not what is happening with you?

Level height

Now I put all joists and rings on Level 8 and change the offset to 8' and when I hit Ctrl+C Level is changed to 10' offset. Some rooms in the house are 8-ft ceiling. What is the proper way to draw ceiling joists at 8' when you also have ceiling joists at 10'?

Joists

Vince, I looked at the project you sent me. When I did a cleanup some of the joists moved up to 10' while others did not. The ones that did not move had Cleanup disabled for that joist but the ones that moved had Cleanup turned on. So if you will edit your joists in this area and turn Cleanup off for each of them then you should not have any other problems.

Something you might consider in the future to prevent something like this from happening. You drew a ceiling joist system spanning over 3 rooms. But because you wanted your joist layout to be different in Bedroom #2 you exploded the entire ceiling system. Now you are dealing with a bunch of individual joists rather than just 1 ceiling system. A better approach would have been to draw 1 ceiling system over the Utility and Bedroom #3 and a different ceiling system over Bedroom #2. That way you are dealing with ceiling systems rather than a bunch of individual joists.

Cleanup Joists

Thanks Bill! I have been un-check-ing the Cleanup boxes all the day long. SoftPlan Tech Support said that I should check then uncheck the Cleanup boxes. I don't know why you have some with Cleanup boxes checked. I'm going to delete the 8' joists and rings and draw them again as you recommend, see if this time I actually can have an 8'-offset joists.

Yes I am getting the same

Yes I am getting the same thing. Looks like a bug. Probably ought to send Softplan a support ticket.

The floor moves back to the original position but the offset (listed in the edit box) remains the same.

So if it said -2' down before then in order to get it to display correctly again you have to enter -4' down

That is strange.

That is not the case in my test Bill. I only have one ring joist and it will not stay put.

In my test I did get it to

In my test I did get it to work correctly when I had a reference wall at the correct height and the level was set to 2

So in most cases it should work.
