Pretty Models Don't Equate To Pretty 2D Drawings
SoftPlan Version:
2014 Plus

After creating some models in Sketchup and then entering them in SP as symbols, my models look really nice. But when I go to do sections using the section line tool my 2D drawing sucks a bit. My pediments are showing the triangulation lines from making the model. Any thoughts on a better way to make the pediments in Sketchup would be appreciated or an easier way to remove the triangulation lines would be of great help. Links would be appreciated also.

Thank you,

Jerry Quesenberry

Triangulation

Triangulation of 3D models is just the way it is in 2014 and earlier. Improvements in 2016 got rid of the triangulations in Sketchup models. For 2014 I would suggest exporting out 2D views from Sketchup and then import them into SoftPlan and create symbols. Then change out the triangulated generated symbols with the clean ones.

Just out of curiosity, since you are a SoftPlan+ subscriber why not upgrade to 2016 and take advantage of the updated capabilities?

Honestly Bill, I ordered the

Honestly Bill, I ordered the program at the start of the year when SP was having the package were you got 2016 upgrade free. I installed the program about 2 months ago but only got around to using it a couple of weeks ago as work has started to tail off. I haven't upgraded to 16 because I didn't think there would be a huge difference. Programs' kicking me in the face as I try to tackle things I probably shouldn't mess with at this stage but I've got a builder pushing me to start putting out some 3D models or else so I'm pushing as hard as I can.

Version 2016

There are lots of great features that were added and numerous improvements in 2016 vs 2014. For example the improved Sketchup integration. Not only can you use Sketchup models without the triangulation problem but you can also export directly to Sketchup format models. In previous versions the exports to a format that Sketchup could read were heavily triangulated and multiple faces were reversed. With 2016 export to Sketchup is pretty much perfect. There are so many great new features that I use every day. Right now I am working on a big project for someone who, like you, has SoftPlan+ but is still using 2014. So I am having to use 2014 on this project and it gets pretty frustrating at times having to go back and do things the old way when I could get them done much faster and easier in 2016. One big difference that is frustrating me is that 2016 finally added support for the 3DConnexion 3D mice. Going back to 2014 I keep grabbing for my 3D mouse and it doesn't work. A lot of the changes between versions are just small tweaks and improvements. But when you add them all up there is a huge difference.
