Openings on false gables
SoftPlan Version:
2014 Plus

I'm drawing a home that has a large false gable on the front.  I have searched and find nothing on adding an opening (window) to it.  I've attempted drawing a dormer and moving the window from it.  I have added a gable vent in hopes I could edit it into the opening.  Am I going to have to add a wall to the false gable? If so, can someone direct me to where this is covered in the manual or help menu?  My searches are coming up empty.

Gable window

Bill, you can edit a vent into a window. Edit the False Gable and select the Gable tab. Check Gable Vent. Select Vent Options. Click within the Library box and browse to the window library that contains the window you want to use. Select the window you want.

Thanks for taking me a step

Thanks for taking me a step further than I was going Bill.  Not sure why I didn't look at the different libraries other than I was attempting to click the vent in 3D to edit it and that didn't work.

I recently ran into the same

I recently ran into the same problem and figured out the gable vent trick, but I need to add shutters to the window.  This seems to be posing a problem since the window isn't technically an opening.  I tried making a new opening with shutters and adding it to the library but the shutters just end up being holes in the model.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Shannon

Gable window

Hey Shannon. Since you didn't provide any images or a description of the type of gable material and wall material below I will just assume that the gable material is the same as the wall.

First of all edit the gable and remove any vent you previously placed. Also uncheck "Gable End Provided by Roof". Now edit the wall below the gable and under "Adjust Wall Surface to..." place a check next to "Fit to Soffit". This will run the wall material all the way up to the roof but leave the wall framing where it was. Then just insert the window you want to be in the gable at the location where you want it to be and adjust the offset up to place the window in the gable. Finally on the Display tab for the window check "Hidden". The window will appear dashed on the plan but it will not print. When you print the floor plan it will appear as if the window wasn't there.

Great suggestion from Bill.

Great suggestion from Bill. And if your gable material and wall material are different, you could also uncheck "Gable End Provided by Roof" and add wall stacked on top of the lower one, make that one fit to your soffit and put it on an hidden layer.
