Openings for exterior Details

Bill:

I read you article about creating openings. Very helpful. Created opening, but only wanted a niche aboout 2" in depth so it wouldnt show through wall. Opening is visible from both sides of wall.  Help????

Openings

Unfortunately there isn't a way to have an opening go partially through a wall. They always go completely through the wall. About all I can suggest would be to create a couple walls and place them side by side. One wall would be the thickness that you want the depth of the opening to be. And the other wall would be the total wall depth minus the depth of the first wall. You could have just one side of each wall visible so that when they are placed next to each other it would appear as if they are a single wall rather than two walls.

Opening

I may have a way to do what you want but I don't have the time right now to investigate it. I'll look into it this evening and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the reply. I may

Thanks for the reply. I may have come up with a work around,  I created opening and then filled in back of wall by drawing a solid cube just thin enough to fill hole.  It worked ok

thanks l kelsey

Niche

What I've done is to draw a solid cube which I then saved as a dwg while in Softview to be able to create a vent which I called a "Niche filler" (but you can call it anything). When I created the niche in the vents library, I set the frame thickness to 0.

Ounce you've created your niche in the vent library you can insert it in a wall and edit it unchecking "Product Code" so you can edit the size, the frame offset so that it's flush with one side of the wall and the thickness depending on the depth of the niche.
