Opening Schedule
SoftPlan Version:
2014

I find that Opening Schedule in Notes is not of much value.  The note will generate the correct door, but if you modify any part of it, say change a door swing, the note will not pick up the change.  It only says it was modified.  Do others agree with this assessment, or am I doing something wrong.  Would really like for the opening schedule to be correct for take-off and ordering of materials.

Prehung

SoftPlan's default openings come defined as "prehung". A prehung door would be either Left or Right. To avoid the "Modified" tags you would need to edit all of your doors in the System Library. When editing the opening you will find the Prehung designation in the Edit Individual Component portion of the opening definition.

You can do this in two different ways:

You could create separate Left Hand and Right Hand doors, all of them prehung. The disadvantage of this is that you have twice as many doors and you have to select the correct hand each time you insert a door. Also, if you reverse the plan all the doors will be wrong.

A better option, and this is what I have done, is to simply edit all of your doors and uncheck prehung. That way you can insert the doors and adjust the swing as needed and you won't get the Modified tag. Of course you would do this in your System Library. This will not affect any drawings that you have already inserted the door into. You will have to go to the Drawing Library and reset all of your doors in existing drawings.

If I were to change the System Library on my window and doors, can I then "reset" the drawing library so the modifications and or corrections I made to the system would show up on the old drawing?

Sorry, Just re-read the last line.

Thanks Bill.

Resetting

Resetting the Drawing Libraries should bring in the updated openings. But since you may have unchecked Product Code for some of the openings your results may vary. You may need to go back through the plan and re-enable the product codes which may reverse the doors. Going back and fixing existing drawings can be a bit of a pain but if you change all your doors to remove the Prehung setting they will be much easier going forward.

Opening schedules

My problem with the schedules is that if you make modifications to the setting of the schedule (ex. font size, spacing,..) to fit in the space you have on your drawing, if you change an opening and want to regenerate the schedule, you loose your settings and have to re-ajust everytime taking away from the usefulness of the schedule.

Opening Schedules

Yvon, I typically don't use Opening Schedules other than on large customs and for one of the builders I work for. You can set the fonts and font sizes in the Character Setup for the Drawing and System. So if you need a specific font and size you don't have to edit each line. You just edit the Character Setup and all the fonts will be set automatically.

I try to have all of my Product Codes and Libraries set up so they have the proper names in the Library Name and Product Code columns. But occasionally I need to edit a few of the names. In a situation where I may have edited some of the names I generally just create a new Opening Schedule next to the old one and see what has changed. If it is easier to edit the original then I will edit it with the new information. If it is easier to regenerate and edit the names I'll do that. In any event if the client wants to see Opening Schedules it isn't that difficult to do them and updating them is quick and easy.

Also, I typically wait until I am finishing up the plans before generating any of the Schedules. That way it minimizes any editing.

Thanks Bill for the suggestions. I just modified the font setting to the smallest that I usually have to use. I also copy the schedule and regenerate that schedule to be able to copy items in the old one specially for items like fractions. Since we are a builder, I can't wait to the end to generate the schedule because we create our standard models then copy them them for each lot we build. To bad the schedule can't just update the modified items.

Thanks for the help!

So what is it that you have to edit on the schedule? If you have your Product Codes, fonts, Fields to Include in Table, and other selections set up properly it should be a simple matter of editing the existing schedule and selecting Regenerate from the Schedule Properties tab. The Schedule updates with the current information and you go merrily about your business. Usually the only editing I do is to change  the heading "Hinge Direction" to "Hinge".

Here is an example of one of my Opening Schedules. The only editing I did was to edit the Hinge title.

Hopefully Softplan 2016 can begin to play with the big boys and have more parametric content. This would really solve these issues. Even on small projects it's really nice to have an opening schedule.
