See attached sketch regarding the size of Octagons, Circles, Capsules etc. that enclose opening ID's.
Unfortunately the size of the shapes are determined by the size of the font and the amount of text. The only way to get uniform shapes is to use actual shapes. If that is a big deal to you I would suggest creating a series of symbols with the shapes, numbers, and letters you want and use them to manually place the opening id's. Use actual shapes, not the Note Outlines or you will get the same result as with the opening id's.

Thats what I figured Bill, thanks !
Unfortunately, it's one of those automated little items that makes life easier but doesn't
really look too professional coming from a $3K program !
Opening ID's can plague the quick and easy generation of desired (and pretty simple) Opening Schedules. I think.
On Note / Opening Schedule, SP displays a dialog box, saying something about Conflicting Opening Schedule ID's, and then asking if I want SP to change ID. Clicking the "no" option closes the box. Clicking the "yes" option will cause assigned ID('s) to change to something else, some unwanted and mysterious alpha or numeric of thus far undeterminable origin.
Anybody know much about that? Thanks in advance.
Any chance this is changed in 2014? I really don't care for the lack of options when it comes to labeling openings. I would like to choose 'numbers' for doors & 'letters' for windows. It would also be nice if you could set the way the order themselves. Renumbering them will always throw them in some random order and I always spend too much time for each project cleaning up my schedules.
2014 allows you to determine whether you want to use numbers or letters. No change in the Renumber Opening Id's Command. Personally, I don't use the ID's. It is just way too much work dealing with them and you have to either edit the opening or reference the Opening Schedule to find out what an opening size and configuration are. I name all of my openings with descriptive names and display Product Codes. That way I or anyone else can tell at a glance what the size and type an opening is.
That is a step in the right direction.
I understand your point, but it is just a local standard around here to use schedules for the openings.
You can use opening schedules no matter what display format you choose. I can generate an opening schedule that uses the product code names I have assigned to each of my openings.
I typically just edit each window and number them in the order I want.
One thing to be aware of when doing a renovation or addition where you don't want the existing windows and/or doors from the original building to be included in the Opening Schedule is to make sure that in the Edit Menu under the "Softlist" tab that you uncheck the "Include In Softlist" button.
And, ensure that all the new Windows/Doors have that box checked to be included in Softlist.
Then when you generate a Schedule near the bottom of the "Generate Opening Schedule" menu there is a place to check "Only Add Openings Included In Softlist". If that box is checked then the Schedule will only show the new windows/doors that were checked to be included in Softlist and not those original openings that were excluded from Softlist.
