Octagon
SoftPlan Version:
2014 Plus

When I create a 12' diameter octagon shape and draw extension lines from it - it says it's 12'.   But in fact the extension lines are running well outside of the edges of the octagon and if I explode it it turns out to be more like 11'-1" plus.    This is the same in both 2012 and 2014 ?    Is there some setting that will change this behavior or some reason why it is like this ????

Jim - Apparently Softplan

Jim - Apparently Softplan treats the octagon as a circle and the extension lines attach where the circle would be.  basically a 10' octagon is 10' from corner to corner, not flat side to flat side.

Octagon

Thanks Cory, it had just occurred to me that this was the case.   It makes it a bit of a trial and error  though to draw

an octagon that is in fact 12' flat to flat unless there is a formula to determine this ?

Reason the whole things started was I was going to draw a deck that was 12' wide with a square end and then the client asked

if we could make the end an octagon shape so I figured the easiest way to draw this would be to draw a 12' octagon shape located

where I required it and then trace the deck shape with snap on, then delete the octagon shape.

As it turned out  drawing a 12' octagon shape did me no good since it was not 12' flat to flat !

Jim, draw an octagon. It doesn't matter what size. Select Edit--> Adjust Size. Draw a box around the octagon and select the Distance option. Enter a distance, in this case 12'. Turn on snaps and click on any 2 opposite sides. The octagon will adjust in size to be 12' from side to side.

Adjust Size

Eureka !!!!   Bill I don't think I ever would have thought to use the Adjust Size feature in this context but it makes perfect sense, thanks a million !
