Layers and Building Options

Pop quiz!    Who likes true / false tests!?     Essays get extra credit!

1.    Layer off or on will remove or make available (provided other settings are right, also) object visibility in planview modes, but will not effect object visibility in Softview.

2.    Building Options off or on removes or potentiates object visibility in Softview, but does not effect object visibility in planview modes.

3.    Layer settings are specific to modes. That is, the several modes within planview mode can each have their own unique Layers settings.

4.    Building Options will be the same in all of the modes within planview mode. Change the Building Option settings in one planview mode is changing the Building Option settings for all planview modes.

Thanks for taking the test. I

Thanks for taking the test. I don't know if those are the right answers or not. The "test" began as writing what I thought at the time was accurate. I was hoping someone else could clarify.

Layers and Building Options

1. Correct. Layers only affect plan views and not 3D views.

2. Incorrect. Building Options are a sort of Super Layer. Building Options affect both plan views and 3d views. Additionally they affect all drawings within the same folder. So if you have items assigned Building Option 1 in several drawings within the same folder and you turn Building Options 1 off then all drawings are affected. This applies to both 2D and 3D.

3. Correct. Each mode has its own layer visibility setting.

4. Correct. See 2 above.

Thanks again, Bill. This plan

Thanks again, Bill. This plan has variations a and b (left / right). All Layers and Building Options that (have anything in them) are on. Both the floor system and the roof (not the rafters) continue to be visible in all modes, even though all modes other than roof have roof visibility box unchecked. Most puzzling.

Building Options

Building Options settings are saved in a separate file along with your drawings. This Building Options file is named buildingOps.spo. I would need that file in order to see how you have everything set up. Note to users of version 2012 and beyond the Building Options are saved in the Project file.

Building Options

There is a good explanation of how to use Building Options in the SoftPlan Help. In the search type in Building Options and the first item listed should be "Using Building Options to Show Optional Designs". Go through that tutorial and you should get a better idea of how to use Building Options.

why would you use layers then

why would you use layers then over building options. Wouldn't it make more sense to just use building options for everything?

Layers vs Building Options

Layers affect just the current drawing. Each drawing can have different layers with different settings if you wish. Building options affect ALL drawings in the Project. You don't have any individual per drawing settings when using Building Options.

Layers also have additional options available such as the ability to set everything on a certain layer to be faded and/or to have a certain pen assignment.
