Brick Column?

I am wanting to create an item that allows the architect to select 'brick column', and be able to click in one place on the drawing and it will place a 13"x13" brick column there.  The way I have it set up now is just a 13" wide brick wall, but they have to get it exactly 13" long when drawing it, to draw a square column.  A simple click-and-place like a regular fiberglass column or object would be better, but I wasn't sure if it was possible to set something like that up.

It would also need to include the Brick A item, so that I could calculate the brick.   (It couldn't be just an aesthetic object).

Thanks

Column

What kind of column? Support column, decorative column, fence column? Basically, how will this column be used? Is it to always be a standard height or does it vary? Does it support a beam? Is it just straight from bottom to top or is there some sort of decorative detail? The type of column will determine how you would create it.

Sorry, guess I should have

Sorry, guess I should have been more specific.  13x13 brick column on back porches.  Extend from porch slab up to the soffit.  The height will vary depending on the height of the soffit, generally 8, 9, or 10'.  Shoring post in the middle, with brick around it.  Load bearing.

Sam, I haven't forgotten you. I've just been so covered up with work that I haven't had the time to write out a detailed procedure.

Short version: Create a new Post. System Options⇒System Library type Post. Give it a name such as Brick Column 13x13. Set the width and depth to 13". Set the height to some size such as 7'. The height doesn't matter. Since this is a post you can edit the post after it has been inserted and select "Adjust Height to Fit Beam" and the height will automatically adjust up to the beam. Link to 3D Symbol Post⇒square.dwg. If the posts are typically offset up or down you can set a default offset. Make sure SoftList is checked.

Create a new SoftList formula of type Post. Click on Library and make sure Link Whole Library is unchecked. Select your 13x13 column from the list. Set Calculation Method to Accumulate and Add to Material "Brick". Set Calculate Quantity to width x depth x height.

Create another SoftList formula of type Post. Again under Library select your 13x13 column. List Format, Quantity=1, Calculate Dimension enter the width and depth of the interior post, for example 5.5" and 5.5" and then the height variable.

If you need more detailed instructions let me know and I'll try to help you out sometime over the weekend.

Got it!  Everything is

Got it!  Everything is calculating correctly in the formulas i created, both brick and post size in the report.  Thank you sir.  I couldn't figure out how to export the post to add it to the library on the architect's computer, so I just created a symbol item with the same name and specs on her computer.  Hopefully my takeoff formulas will pull from her symbol when she draws them since the name and everything should be the same.

Post definitions are files, much similar to symbol files. You will find them at C:\SoftPlan2014\Post. Just copy the post from your computer to the other computer, placing it in the same location and you should be good to go.
