Adding Symbols in Elevation Drawings
SoftPlan Version:
2016 Plus

I've been looking for any information on this, but I'm afraid the answer is just going to be "no"...

I am detailing some interior elevations and want to add symbols that aren't on my floor plan. Can I add the "elevation" view of a symbol to a drawing? For instance, the front elevation of a mini-fridge.

Sure, you can add symbols to your interior elevations. Just create the interior elevation by switching to the Model tab. Insert an Interior Elevation line. Double click on the Interior Elevation number that shows up in Navigation Pane under Interior Elevations⇒Views. Select File⇒Save As and save the Interior Elevation as a drawing file. The saved Interior Elevation will show up under Interior Elevations⇒Drawings. You can then edit this saved elevation like any other drawing. Even though it is a saved drawing you still are able to use the automatic Markers when you insert the drawing into a Plan Set.

I did all that, but I wanted to add a few details that aren't on my floor plan. can I add symbols like a fridge and sink and have them show up in 2d elevation view instead of plan view?

Confused

I must not be understanding your question. Once the elevation has been saved to a drawing file you can add any symbols, notes, or anything else just like any other drawing. A saved elevation drawing is not linked to the floor plan except that it is linked to the Marker number. Changes to the saved drawing do not affect the original floor plan and vice versa.

In your Symbols library under Kitchen you should see a library named Elevation Symbols. There should be a few symbols in there and you can add more as needed. I have a bunch of elevation symbols I have created and I generally change out the generated symbols with symbols from this library. Many times the generated symbols are very complex and triangulated. My saved elevation symbols are simple and optimized.

This is it. I didn't see the elevation symbols in my search. They seem to be too limited for what I need, but that's what I'm trying to do.

Is there a way to take the 3d symbol that only has a "plan view" 2d representation and save/create an "elevation" 2d representation? Or do I have to draw everything from ground zero? I mean, if they are brought in from an elevation view and saved as a drawing they seem to create this elevation representation automatically... but I can't find them anywhere to insert it directly onto an elevation without first putting it in the model and creating an elevation callout and saving as a drawing.

Once you save your elevation you have the symbol. Just copy the elevation symbol off to the side then explode it. If needed clean it up to get rid of extra lines and triangulation. Then create a new symbol from this. If you are a Sketchup user you could also open the 3D models in Sketchup and save out elevation views of 3D models. Sketchup is my preferred method since I can control the amount of detail and avoid triangulation of details.

Layers

Thinking about your question again...perhaps you are wanting to have 3D symbols show in the Elevation but not on the plan. Layers affect 2D but not 3D. The generated elevation is a 3D view until it is saved as a drawing file. So you could include symbols on the floor plan and put then on a layer that is turned off. They will not show on the 2D floor plan but they would show in the 3D Interior Elevation. Symbols could also be set as "Hidden". A hidden symbol will show on the 2D but will not print. The 3D generated Interior Elevation would not be affected by the hidden setting.
