I sometimes want to place a planter box or hot tub or swim spa cut into a deck or floor.

Without having to search around for some 3D depiction of what I want often it is easier to just create a solid cube or similar

to drop down into the deck.  However, that just leaves a flat top on the cube and does not reasonably depict the hollowed

out part of a box, tub or spa.    How would I best best create that hollowed out ( or depressed ) part, so a 3D looks a little

more like it should ?

Jim, I'm not completely sure I understand your question in its entirety. Are you are asking how you can cut a hole in a deck so that you can insert an object and have the deck cut out around it? If so then you can use Draw--> Deck--> Framed Opening Rectangle or Framed Opening Poly to cut a hole in the deck.

If you are trying to create something like a planter box to then drop down into the hole in the deck you could use walls or 3D solids such as cubes or 3D polygons to form the planter box. If you would provide an illustration of what you are trying to achieve I might be able to come up with a better solution.

You can build that using cubes. In the image below I used 5 cubes. The bottom cube has a height of 2" and is offset down 2". The sides have a height of 2' and are offset at 0". If you are going to use this in just one project there is no need to convert this into a symbol but if you are going to use it in numerous projects you can make it into a symbol.

Bill, if I sunk that into a deck to represent a sunken hot tub would it cut the deck or would just the the uppper edges of the vertical cubes show thru the

top of the deck and the decking would continue to run thru ?  Or doe sit make a difference if I make it into a symbol for cutting the deck or floor surface.

You would need to use Draw--> Deck--> Framed Opening Rectangle or Framed Opening Poly to cut a hole in the deck for the planter. Otherwise you will see the deck continue on through the inside of the planter. Just build your planter using cubes to get the desired size and location then you can cut the deck out around the planter. Decks don't automatically cut out like a countertop would when you place a sink on the counter.
