Jack stud count
SoftPlan Version:
2018 Plus

I am trying to figure out a formula to count all my studs. I do not want to split up the jack studs from the other precut studs. Our framers take a precut and cut it down to a jack stud, so I want my take off to reflect that. I am attaching screen shots of the formulas and the softlist report.

One formula has:

if not (stud type=jack)

and the other formula I took that line out hoping it would include those jack studs in my overall stud count.

But...both formulas are giving me the same count.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

JACK

Just removing the line "if not (stud_type=jack)" does not allow for jacks to be counted in this formula because you still have "if within(stud_height,1.125",precut_B)" which checks the length of the stud. Since the jack stud would not be within 1.125" of precut_B then this line also excludes the jack.

I would modify your Jack stud formulas to count the jacks and report them with a length of precut_B if they are within a certain factor of the length of Precut_B. And other formulas for jacks of varying lengths to count them as precut_A or precut_C, etc. Then I would use accumulate to combine studs and jacks to get a total count.

Accumulate

Thanks Bill,

I now have two different formulas. One for studs and one for jacks. They both report as pre_cuts. I haven't figured out yet how to accumulate custom formulas so it comes up as one number instead of two. Which isn't the end of the world...I can add up two numbers for a take off. Just looking to be more efficent. Once I click on Accumulate, my custom formula goes away and I have to input in List format. Is there a code for accumulate to enter in a custom formula?

Alternate approach

Hmmm...ok. Perhaps take a different approach and combine the two formulas into one formula something like this.

if between (stud_width,3",5") and within(stud_thickness,0.5", 1.5")
  if within(stud_height,1.125",precut_B)
    set_dimens(inches,inches,inches)
      list(1,2",4",precut_B)
  endif
  if formula for counting jacks
    set_dimens(inches,inches,inches)
    list(1,2",4",precut_B)
  endif
endif

stud, jack, cripple formula

After lots of trial and error, this is the formula that tech helped me with. It combines studs, jacks, and cripples. Formula below in case anyone else needs it!

if between (stud_width,3",5") and within(stud_thickness,0.5", 1.5")
   if matches(stud_type, common,backer,king)
      if between(stud_height,precut_A-1.125",precut_A+1.125") or matches(stud_height,precut_A-1.125",precut_A+1.125")
         set_dimens(inches,inches,inches)
         list(1,2",4",precut_A)
      else
         if stud_height<precut_A+1.125"
            set_dimens(inches,inches,inches)
            list(stud_height/precut_A,2",4",precut_A)
         endif
      endif
   endif
   if num_heights=2
      if between(max_height,precut_A-1.125",precut_A+1.125") or matches(max_height,precut_A-1.125",precut_A+1.125")
         if stud_type=jack
            set_dimens(inches,inches,inches)
            list(1,2",4",precut_A)
         else
            if matches(stud_type,cripple,sill_jack)
               set_dimens(inches,inches,inches)
               list(stud_height/precut_A,2",4",precut_A)
            endif
         endif
      endif
   endif
endif

Glad you got it sorted out smiley
