Help with this site

The pool of talented people joining SoftPlanTuts is increasing all the time. If you would like to help make this the best resource for everything SoftPlan we could use your help.

Up until now I've been doing pretty much everything from designing and building the site to writing tutorials. But this site was never intended to be just one person doing everything. It is intended to be a community effort. With that in mind I am seeking people who would be willing to add their expertise to making this site so much more than what can be achieved with just the efforts of one person. If we all contribute something we can all get something back and increase our knowledge.

I would like to find people who are willing to help out in the following areas:

  • Articles: Write articles about anything relating to the building and design industry as well as anything that would be beneficial to business owners in general.
  • Tutorials: Write tutorials dealing with various subjects. Subjects can include SoftPlan, SoftList, Sketchup, Renderings, Photoshop, Spreadsheets, etc. Basically anything that you have an expertise in that would be beneficial and helpful to other SoftPlan users.
  • Video Tutorials: If you have the ability to produce videos on how to perform various aspects of using SoftPlan, Sketchup, Photoshop, or any other software that is used in the design and building business we would love to add them to the video library. Also, if you can't produce the videos yourself you can still contribute by writing the script for a video, laying out the steps to perform various tasks. Then I or someone else could take the script and use it to create a video tutorial. Also, suggestions for tutorial topics are needed.
  • Forum: Get involved on the Forum and help people when they have questions. There are often numerous ways to perform a task and the more people who provide their expertise the more options become available to everybody.
  • Command Reference: Back when I started this site I built out all the structure to be able to provide a very comprehensive command reference for SoftPlan. But because of the sheer number of commands, version 2012 has over 800 of them and each new version adds more, I have not had the time to devote to documenting all of the commands. With a group effort we can get this done and provide an excellent resource for new and experienced users alike.

If anyone is willing to help out in any of these areas please reply to this post and let's get the ball rolling!

Thanks to all of you!

As you know, I am not good

As you know, I am not good enough with SP yet to answer a lot of the questions.  However, I have been meaning to share some tips if anyone is interested.  My life as an IT person makes me think about backups, redundancy, convenience, and redundancy all the time

1 - syncing my custom openings b/t multiple computers.  I have a laptop, office pc, and home pc.  So keeping my custom openings sync'd is pretty important to me

2 - syncing projects between multiple PCs.  important to me for the same reasons as above

3 - sharing projects with other designers for collaboration

3 - backing up files to a offsite source.

Mainly I just need to make the time to do it.  If anyone is interested in these items, it might push me to actually do it.

Syncing files

Cory, you might want to check this out. Still in beta so there might be some hickups but is a free service from Carbonite. http://labs.carbonite.com/

I've used carbonite for

I've used carbonite for strictly backup in the past.  They have a nice service.  My setup now is working fine.  I use dropbox for my projects and sugarsync for my files in "C:\SoftPlan2012".  If anyone cares I could always go a little more in detail, but this is how I have everything setup.

Projects:

On the System settings, I have my drawing folder set to "C:\Dropbox\Softplan2012\Projects".  This automatically syncs my project files with all three of my PCs.  The nice part about dropbox is that it is easy to share file & folders for collaboration.  They also keep a 30 backup of you files.  So if I accidently delete a file, I can go back 30 days to recover it.

Symbols, Openings, etc:

Softplan doesn't like to be installed in a different folder than "C:\Softplan2012", and Dropbox doesn't allow you to select folders or files outside of the Dropbox location.  I had to go another route to sync openings, etc.  I use SugarSync which gives you 5GB of storage for free.  SugarSync allows me to select any folder on my PC to sync with other PCs.  This is pretty convenient for many reasons.  A good example would be that earlier today I needed to edit an opening for a project.  I created a new opening.  Soon as I saved it, SugarSync pushed the new file to my other PCs.

Like most cloud services, you can 'earn' free storage by referring friends.  Btw, if anyone wants to get an extra 500MB for themselves at signup, you can use my referral link https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=npbck6eywrr2&utm_source=website&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=referral&shareEvent=4351794 .  I am pretty sure I maxed out my dropbox credits.  I have 25GB for free. Both services work great.

help with this site

Bill,

I am a glutton for punishment, overbooked and unreliable,

but I'd love to help, I work off-line and use the local library for

internet access, but I will do what I can in the forums, and if you

can give me some pointers as to posting 'helps' I have learned some

little trick's that save time.

ps I am greener than grass with softview, I've been fortunate to

have a backlog of 2D commissions

Quick Tips

Chuck, I appreciate your willingness to pitch in! There is a section of the site that is called Quick Tips. This is primarily for mini-tutorials and tips. It sounds like this would be a perfect fit for what you are describing. Take a look at it and if that is something you would be interested in contributing to I can set you up as a Quick Tips author.

Bill, I've messed around with doing some videos.  I'd like to maybe do one or 2 when 2014 is on my machine.    I'm busy making a living building and designing, so could fit something in at some point.    I look forward to 2014 and all the posting that will take place in the learning process, when it first comes out.   The first couple months when 2012 came out was a huge learning curve for me.           I'll look to this site to filter thru the new changes with 2012

farwood, welcome aboard! The videos I was referring to in this thread are video tutorials. But any videos that you would like to submit of your work can be put in the Gallery. The Gallery supports embedding videos hosted on either Youtube or Vimeo. Be sure to read the instructions provided after selecting "Add Video" in the selections on the right of the page.

If you would like to create tutorials demonstrating how you created your videos those would be welcome as well. If you are interested in creating tutorials or articles let me know and I can set you up.

Yea Bill,  I'm talking about tutorials.    I put my 3d vidoes for my customers on      http://www.screencast.com/users/farwoodhd

and my website at    www.farwood.com

I'm not an expert with any of Softplan, but when I have time I like to do new stuff, videos, learn more of the programs.    But I can do an OK tuteo.       I'm a builder so I use Softplan some times different than an architect or raw designer.   I have work arounds, like I think everyone does.       Some time in the future assuming the economy keeps improving, I'll do up some tuteos and send for your approval.  Or if anyone has a special request on a subject, I would give a go at addressing the subject.    I could slam something out with a request.  I am 3d and softlist.     I'm still copying plans from V14 and pasting to the drawing or project folders in 2012.     Guess now will get to move things over to 2014
